Winston-Salem Spanish AcademyA city in the heart of North Carolina, Winston-Salem contains a vast amount of Spanish history and Latino culture. In 2006, the city reported to the U.S. Census Bureau a total population of 196,406 residents. Of that number, there were 20,536 people that came from Hispanic or Latino origins and 19,147 that used the Spanish language in their homes. Winston-Salem recognizes its rich Hispanic heritage with events like the Hispanic Street Festival, which is sponsored by the city. Area libraries also join together in providing cultural materials to educate the public, especially children, on this culture, with books and other media that focuses on Hispanic and Latino lifestyles. Winston-Salem also has mariachi ceremony music, salsa dancing, and other celebrations and festivals to keep the culture alive and the city rich with ethnic flair. In addition to these offerings, children also can attend bilingual story time at the Forsyth County Library.
